The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle entry for the year 556 states:
Her Cynric 7 Ceawlin fuhton wiþ Brettas æt Beranbyrg.
This year Cuthwin and Ceawlin fought with the Britons, at Barbury Castle.
Beranburh is the Iron Age hillfort Barbury Castle, near Swindon, Wiltshire. It lies on the strategic Ridgeway path. |

Barbury Castle is situated 4 miles south of Swindon and is signposted from the A4361. It can also be reached from the Ridgeway from either West Kennett or Ogbourne St George. A sixth century battle is also recorded at the nearby Adam's Grave. |
