Part of a loose shieldwall fought in open woodland. In this type of fighting a large shield protects the body so that most wounds are to the arms and legs and would not usually be fatal. The warrior must concentrate on several opponents, particularly those on either side of the man he faces as he is more open to a spear thrust from the side than from directly in front.
